2020-2021 Governor Livingston High School Athletic Registration

Dear Season 3 and Spring Sport Student Athletes and families:

I hope you and your family are well and navigating these challenging times!  Below are the details for the 2020-21 Winter Sports Registration process.

The NJSIAA recently updated the 2020-21 Winter Sports Seasons.  Please review:

NJSIAA changes of Winter Sports Season and Volleyball (from the Fall):

Sport

Practice Start

Date

Competition Start Date

Competition End Date

Girls Volleyball and Wrestling

(NJSIAA Season 3)

March 1, 2021

March 16, 2021

April 24, 2021

Game limitations:

Girls Volleyball and Wrestling- 15 games- including Union County Volleyball Tournament.  As for wrestling, at this time the NJDOH does not permit multi-team competitions- but this may be adjusted at a later date.  The teams will be limited to 3 games/matches per week.  As of 11/19/20, this season will overlap with the current Spring Season and facility adjustments will need to be created.   The NJSIAA Sports Task Force will continue to monitor the possibility for post-season play but a tournament format will conclude by April 24, 2021.

SEASON 3 ONLY- Additional notes:

As of 2/12/21- Executive Order 220 allows 2 parents/guardians per student athletes.  Student athletes will receive Daily Questionnaire/Game Tickets for each home game.   Details on live stream competitions are posted on the GLHS website.  No out of state competition is suspended due to Executive Order 194.

Spring Sports/Season 4- The NJSIAA and the Governor's Office will update the outdoor gathering details at a later date.

The NJSIAA Advisory Sports Task Force will make every effort to keep the Spring Athletic Season intact.  Please note the spring season will most likely extend through the month of June.  The NJSIAA State Tournaments will begin June 1st to June 20th.

Thank you as always for being the best of the best and willing to champion the Highlander Way of working through challenges together.

In closing, please note that the Winter Season 3 start dates and competition dates have been pushed back:

NJSIAA Rationale: By delaying and adjusting 2020-21 Winter (and Volleyball) Season(s), the NJSIAA Task Force is confident that the opportunity to participate in intescholastic athletics can move forward.  By reducing the length of the season, student-athletes will not only have the opportunity for participation but will have more time to focus on their academic requirements. Leagues and conferences have the ability to amend their schedules for regular season competitions with a focus on keeping athletics local. There is no model that eliminates all risks, but a reduced season will naturally lead to a reduced amount of competition, which minimizes the risk of infection or spread by exposure to many different teams and schools.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every school district differently. This winter season will focus on providing athletic opportunity, engagement and participation – not winning championships. In order to focus participation and to level the playing field athletically, there will be no state-wide, postseason competition under this delayed start model.

Multiple Season Participation – Student-athletes are permitted to participate in all seasons as defined by the NJSIAA during the 2020-21 school year.  Current NJSIAA seasons are: Season 1, Season 2, Season 2A, Season 3, and Season 4.

·       A student-athlete can practice or compete in two sports at the same time.

·       Student-Athletes that are involved in overlapping sports are not subject to the six-day practice rule if they start the next sport within three days of the completion of the first sport.

·       Student-athletes that begin the 2nd overlapping sport within three days are eligible for competition immediately unless the school self imposes a minimum amount of practices needed before a student-athlete is approved for competition in an overlapping sport.

·       If a student-athlete is inactive for more than three days involving overlapping sports, then the six-day practice rule will be in effect.

Be well,

Ann Clifton, Director of Health Physical Education and Athletics
