PHILOSOPHY
The Otter Valley Union Athletic Department strives to provide an athletic program of excellence for all its students. We believe that there are certain values that are important in any educational program and that these values can be well taught in an athletic program. Among these values are dedication to excellence, hard work, self-discipline, team effort, and self-control.
We believe that participation in athletics is a privilege that is accorded any student who is willing to adhere to the standards and rules of an athletic team. We believe that studies come first and that the values and attitudes learned in athletics contribute to the complete education of the individual.
Moral, emotional, and social development are particularly important contributions of athletics, and it is to these ends that athletics must direct a great part of their efforts. It is also recognized that the positive value of athletics is directly related to the quality of leadership. The personal example of everyone connected with our program will do much to assure its success.
We believe that participation in sports provides a wealth of opportunities and educational development of your boys and girls through athletics, and believe that a properly controlled, well-organized sports program helps to fulfill the students' needs for self-expression, mental alertness, and physical growth. It is our hope that when your son/daughter enlisted in one of our sports programs, he/she committed our staff to certain responsibilities and obligations. We are committed to providing:
q
adequate equipment
and facilities
q
qualified coaches
q
equalized contests
with skilled officials
Likewise, we believe that
you as parents have certain responsibilities and obligations. We would
like to take this opportunity to acquaint you with specific standards that are
necessary for a well-organized program of athletics. It is the role of
the Athletic Program to make rules that govern the spirit of competition for
the school. These rules need a broad basis of community support, which is
achieved only through communication with parents. It is our hope to
accomplish this objective through this athletic publication for students and
parents.
TO STUDENT
ATHLETES
Being a member of an Otter
Valley athletic team is the fulfillment of an early ambition for many
students. A great athletic tradition is not built overnight. It
takes the hard work of many people over many years. We strive to win, but
only with honor to our athletes, our school, and our community. Over many
years, our teams have achieved league championships, individual league honors,
and team and individual state championships. The contributions you make
to your team and school should be satisfying to you and your family.
When you wear the colors of
your school, you assume the responsibilities that go with them. These
include:
1. Responsibility to yourself. A
most important task is to broaden you and develop strength of character.
You owe it to yourself to get the greatest possible good from your high school
experiences. Your academic studies and your participation in sports and
other co-curricular activities prepare you for later life.
2. Responsibility to your school and
community. As a team member, you are responsible to your
school. OtterValley cannot build its position as having an outstanding
school unless you do your best in whatever activity you choose. By
participating in athletics to the maximum of your ability, you are contributing
to the reputation of your school. You assume a leadership role when you
are on the athletic squad. The student body and citizens of the community
know you. You are on stage with the spotlight on you. Your conduct
and attitudes, both on and off the field will be used to judge your
school. Because of this leadership role, you can contribute greatly to
your school spirit and community pride. Make the OtterValley community
proud of its school by your faithful exemplification of these ideals.
